Moon Bounce is the mutant-pop alias of producer, songwriter and vocalist, Corey Regensburg. Taking cues from dance music, R&B, and even the rhythmic lurch of metal, his output combines soulful melodies with jilted percussion and hyper-controlled synthesis. Obsessed with groove and occasionally on the verge of falling apart, his sonic palette has always been constructed completely from scratch.
His latest LP, Skip Intro, was written after moving to Los Angeles, marrying his favorite rapper (Cape Town’s fiery Push Push) and signing with the legendary Domino Publishing, putting him in the room with artists ranging from Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe to The Bloody Beetroots to Janelle Kroll (singer for Big Data). A memento of panic-ridden ruminations, Skip Intro does not shy away from difficult topics, bringing listeners into the darkness as Regensburg unabashedly confronts himself.
Moon Bounce’s sound has continued to evolve; obtuse rhythms, helium-soaked vocals and larger-than-life production create a distinctly immersive environment, as can be heard on his latest release with Madge as popcore duo, xR. Their debut EP, xR 1 (released in October 2021) creates a post-world that synthesizes hyper with hard, catchy and cruel. Moon Bounce brings to the mix his love of hardcore ear candy, where early-aughts MySpace remains a primary pillar of influence.
Looking forward, Regensburg’s next wave of sonic explorations remain predictably unpredictable; dabbling equally in bossanova, metal and instrumental, club-driven electrified bangers. One thing’s for sure: Moon Bounce's arsenal of auditory delights keeps growing.
"His most cohesive work to date, Clean House features nine eccentric, no-boundaries tracks that turn electro-pop music on its head. Elements of M83 and Glass Animals seep its way into the album, amongst sultry vocals and well-crafted pop lyrics–with songwriting influences ranging from Michael Jackson to Prince to Michael McDonald"
"Much like the music, the visuals for this synth heavy pop tune are both nostalgic and innovative"
"An excellent debut, full of challenging but catchy pop tunes that are just weird enough. Regensburg's confident production skills and unorthodox approach to rhythm are immediately striking"
"The restless vocal glitches remain, though its melody is brighter, reflecting the song's slightly breezier subject matter"
"Muted yet alive, "Better Now" constantly feels like it's right on the verge of bursting but is weighed down by its own depth. Crackling effects and laser chirps playfully flit to and fro atop a beating percussion, as Regensburg calmly delivers his heavy-set lyrics"
"Maintains the "mutant-pop" producer, songwriter and vocalist's signature jangly sound and explosive production, it also finds Regensburg diving into more complex territory as he lets listeners into his struggles over the past few years"
"An orthodox vocal melody to contrast Corey Regensburg's signature pervasive dissonance"
"What's most impressive though is that this dude doesn't use any samples, and just builds his beats from scratch"
"Embeds crooning vocals into waves of sound that erupt like ocean swells slapping against a shore, and pockets of silence give way to surges of melody and tremendous drum hits"
"Mixing the knowingly playful and the emotionally exploratory in the same ways that make Hot Chip one of the most beloved synth-pop bands ever"
"Moon Bounce describes the project as “mutant pop,” which makes sense given the way Regensburg mixes together all of his disparate influences, creating some hybrid between R&B, trap, and minimalist electronics"
"Very rarely in dance music are those three positions (frontman, songwriter, and producer) occupied by the same creative source, and the fact that Moon Bounce is creating completely original-sounding music separates him even more so from the pack"
